If you’ve been injured in an accident, you may be considering consulting with an attorney. Many attorneys offer free consultations, and making an appointment for a consultation is an excellent way to get answers about your case and the claims process. What should you expect from this meeting? How should you prepare?

First, understand that different law firms have different procedures for their initial consultations. Do a little bit of research before you decide on which attorney to choose, to make sure the one you choose is a good fit for your particular case. Though most personal injury cases end up settling before trial, you may be spending a lot of time with your lawyer if the case doesn’t settle early, so you should have a good rapport. Before your first meeting, take the following steps to make sure you’re prepared.

  • Contact an attorney early. This is perhaps the most important piece of advice you’ll receive. Personal injury cases have a statute of limitations, after which the case cannot be pursued. Don’t wait until the last minute, because speaking to an attorney early gives you a better chance for a favorable outcome.
  • Bring all pertinent information. Bring anything you think might be relevant to the case, remembering that the discussion will center around how the accident occurred as well as your injuries and medical treatment.
  • Be able to articulate your story clearly. You’ll need to tell your story, and you may need to draw a diagram of how the accident happened. It may be helpful to sit down before your appointment and write down everything you can remember about the accident. Ideally, you’ll have taken notes at the accident scene, writing down names of witnesses, officers, and other people at the scene. Recording information on a cell phone is a great way to document information. The attorney will ask questions to clarify what happened.
  • Have your questions ready. Make a list so that you won’t forget anything you wanted to ask about whether you have a case, how long the process will take, how your medical expense will be paid, and what you need to do now. Be prepared for a personal injury case to involve a lengthy process. When you have trustworthy, experienced attorneys on your side, you can have confidence that your case will have the best possible outcome.
